This CD-ROM from Paul Meier, with graphics by Eric Armstrong, is their interactive demonstration of the International Phonetic Alphabet. Armstrong’s design of the interactive chart allows you to click on any symbol to instantly hear Meier’s voicing of it, as you read more detailed information about that symbol. It plays only on a computer. If you are studying accents and dialects with Paul Meier Dialect Services’ books, booklets, or ebooks (also available on this site) and want to hear one of the “signature sounds” in isolation, or in comparison with other sounds, you will find this CD-ROM an invaluable aid. Vowels, consonants, ingressives, suprasegmentals, intonation, diacritics, ejectives, implosives, diphthongs, and clicks are demonstrated.
The charts on the CD-ROM are identical to the ones found here, but owning this CD-ROM allows you to access them at any time, anywhere on a device with a CD drive, without an internet connection. But please be advised that the CD-ROM uses Flash Player. Similar interactive charts (without Flash) are also available as an iTunes app (for your iPhone and iPad), for $3.99. Simply search for “Interactive IPA” in the iTunes app store or click here. The app is also available for Android in the Google Play Store and the Amazon app store.
