A MASTERCLASS
FOR ACTORS AND DIALECT COACHES
WHEN/WHERE: Watch this space for information on dates and venues. The itinerary is to include major US, Canadian, and British cities.
COST: (varies by location)
(includes a complimentary copy of the latest edition of Accents and Dialects for Stage and Screen – 350 pages, 24 dialects, 12 CDs, $99.95 value)
LEARN:
DETAILS:
During our time together we will explore the skills actors need to approach dialect and accent work with confidence; and the techniques needed by dialect coaches.
We will study several dialects and accents from among those most called-for in theatre, film, television, and voice-over.
Additionally, we will explore the following:
- integrating dialect and acting
- researching a dialect from scratch from primary sources (invaluable for actors when there is no coach on the project; or you are the coach, and there is no published instruction)
- the difference between acting in a dialect and acting in an accent
- how to use IPA symbols in notation and transcription
- how to create and edit an mp3 recording (invaluable in our work) Participants are encouraged to bring a lap-top and/or other recording device
CREDIT TOWARD CERTIFICATION:
In response to the demand for training from Paul, a training and certification program will be announced in the near future. If certification is of interest to you, either as an actor or a dialect coach, this master class will earn you credit towards the hours required.
HOSTING A PAUL MEIER WORKSHOP
Paul offers dialects for actors, accent reduction, Shakespeare acting, or voice-over, single-day or longer. If it's acting with an accent you're after, workshop participants receive a copy of Paul's dialect textbook, Accents and Dialects for Stage and Screen, in use at many theatre departments and conservatories around the world. Depending on the numbers of participants, the per-person fee could be little more than the cost of a single copy of the book!
Participants enjoy:
- personal dialect instruction from a leading professor of dialect and dialect coach
- coaching in several dialect monologues — a great boost to audition skills, learning how to seamlessly integrate dialect work with acting
- their own copy of Paul's textbook with accompanying CDs to keep
- Many theatres will schedule a dialect workshop during rehearsals for a current show for which they have leased Paul's show-specific dialect CDs, e.g. My Fair Lady, Oliver, King and I, Secret Garden, and many others. At the same time as Paul gives his workshop, he works one-on-one with the actors from the show, giving in-person coaching, and all for about the same price as leasing his show-specific CDs
